New 'Fantastic Four' Movie Is In The Works

Fox announces franchise reboot right after Disney reveals plans to buy Marvel.

At this point, there's no word on whether "Fantastic Four" stars Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis will return for another go-around as the superpowered family of Reed and Sue Richards, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, respectively. Chiklis previously expressed some doubt to MTV News that he'd reprise his role as the rock-covered hero nicknamed the Thing.

The presence of the Silver Surfer — a character introduced in 2007's "Fantastic Four" sequel — is also up in the air, though Fox has indicated a desire to spin the character off into his own solo film.

Tim Story directed the first two "Fantastic Four" films, neither of which received particularly high praise or box-office numbers, despite the characters' long history as one of Marvel's most iconic superteams.

Mr. Goldstein was seriously injured Sept. 19, in the crash of a Learjet 60 plane in Columbia, S.C. The crash killed four people and injured Travis Barker, a musician and former drummer of the group Blink 182, with whom Mr. Goldstein frequently appeared.

Pattinson, Ray Davies on Letterman

New CDs from Dick Wagner Cy Curnin

Susan Boyle a huge smash on CD

Twilight

Robert Pattinson was interviewed on David Letterman last night and despite the coup and the fun chat where Letterman completely dropped the ball was boring his audience to tears with a lame Sesame Street parody before going into the tremendous version of "You Really Got Me" with Ray Davies...and not interviewing Davies. What is wrong with these people? Davies is on tour with a choral group and superb rearrangements of his material and Letterman talks about...Sesame Street. Not even the Count in honor of Twilight, David chats up "Cookie Monster"... Twilight! The Love that dare not speak it's name. New Moon is going for a "big bite of the box office" according to some trades....and while the "new kids on the movie screen" are raking in the bucks, the old standbys of the modern-era Hollywood don't seem to be faring as well...Eddie Murphy and Will Farrell having problems generating the value for their...I mean your...dollar

...the great Dick Wagner has a CD out, "Full Meltdown", and the producer of Mark Farner and guitarist for Alice Cooper and Lou Reed should be unleashing more of his magic on the world. More about Dick in Gemmzine soon. Cy Curnin of The Fixx also has a superb new CD out...it's utterly fantastic and my review of it will be up here in the next few days. Also appearing on Gemmzine will be reviews of a new book on David Bowie by Marc Spitz, The Freedom To Rock by T.L. Rotkiewicz - a unique record industry fantasy that is very worthy of your time as well as the new tome on Leonard Cohen our good friends at MVD have in release- Hallelujah indeed!

On another serious matter, the L.A. Times puts the budget of the Modern Warfare game at 200M while the monies generated are said to be 550 million in just 5 days...Janet Jackson is talking about Michael Jackson and the new Marty Balin DVD "Live On The Boston Esplanade" produced and directed by yours truly, was released on November 18, 2009. It's made the news in Medford, Mass! along with my interview with Michael Moore...today Medford, tomorrow the world! And speaking of conquering the world, Susan Boyle's new CD has a brilliant rendition of The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" with a nice dash of Marianne Faithful innocence and those exquisite pipes adding something unique and special to the old chestnut. The late Larry Fallon was in a band with the late Jimmy Miller, legendary producer of the Stones. Fallon created a string arrangement for "Wild Horses" that was never released. That would be sublime on a boxed set by the Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World...especially with Boyle bringing big attention to their old copyright.

REPORTS OF STEVEN TYLER LEAVING AEROSMITH by Rohin Guha

Steven Tyler, in a diva-ish homage to Geri Halliwell's abrupt exit from the Spice Girls in 1998, stunned his bandmates with news/lack of further explanation of his own departure. Guitarist Joe Perry says that he knows nothing further, while bassist Tom Hamilton glibly offers how Tyler is always angry at the band.

DB Techno.com

Boston Herald on Tyler/Perry split

I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band,” Perry told the Las Vegas Sun . “I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know.” According to Perry, he’s been working hard to remain relaxed. “Frankly, the last few months, I’ve been wanting not to rock the boat. I don’t want him canceling any more gigs,” Ax man Perry also says the band doesn’t have any qualms about continuing without Tyler and finding a new band member to “move the Aerosmith vibe up a notch.”

"This Is It" Final Box Office Tally Rises

The movie has made another $69.5 million internationally since its Wednesday opening, up from an original box office estimate of $68.5 million, film studio Columbia Pictures said. In total, the movie has made $103.9 million at worldwide box offices, said Columbia Pictures, the Sony Corp division that paid $60 million for the video used in the film.

Michael Jackson's THIS IS IT review

Read Gemmzine editor Joe Viglione's review here:

The documentary film THIS IS IT is a stunning look inside a magician's bag of tricks, a behind-the-scenes chronicle of how a major music tour is put together. On that level alone it is worth more than a view, This Is It becomes the perfect textbook for any college course on marketing intellectual property. In addition to that, This Is It also provides a superior look at the construction (and deconstruction) of some music that is as familiar or almost as familiar worldwide as the music of The Beatles.

LOS ANGELES — In life, Michael Jackson set records, sold out shows and entertained millions. Now he may be gone, but judging by the latest numbers from the smash documentary "Michael Jackson's This Is It," the iconic entertainer is continuing to astound.

Following on the heels of Tuesday night's $2.2 million haul at a series of midnight showings, "This Is It" took in another $7.4 million in its first full day of release — and another $12.7 million overseas. Overall, it gives the film a worldwide total of $20.1 million — impressive numbers for a midweek release, not to mention a documentary. Read more here:

Blue Cheer's Dickie Peterson Rip Bassist/Vocalist Dead at

Had "Summertime Blues" not gone Top 15 in the spring of 1968, Blue Cheer might not have had the opportunity to unleash their expression over numerous albums through multiple personnel changes. Vincebus Eruptum sports a serious silver/off-purple cover wrapped around the punk-metal fury. Leigh Stephens is nowhere near Hendrix, Beck, Clapton, or Jimmy Page, the skill of a Yardbird is replaced by a thud of bass/drums/low-end guitar. Vocalist Dickie Peterson takes almost six minutes on Mose Allison's "Parchment Farm" to talk about shooting his arm, shooting his wife, picking cotton, and having sex. Definitely more risqué than Grand Funk Railroad's "T.N.U.C."...read more here:

The new Captain Kirk to play Jack Ryan...it should be good

"The Hunt For Red October" was an excellent film, and Alec Baldwin would've been the perfect Jack Ryan had he put a little more polish into his performance. Those moments when Jack Ryan spoke to himself were so lame they detracted from what was, otherwise, a superb film with great performances from Scott Glenn and Sean Connery.

Pine actually has the acumen and actor-instincts to pull this one off. Read more...

Interview with Roger Raffee, CEO of GEMM.com

Gemm's founder talks candidly about his experiences starting GEMM.com 15 years ago:

I was a record collector. I used to have garage sales where I’d sell my records. Mostly my extras and stuff I didn’t want. After a while I got the inclination to start selling through a magazine called Goldmine. My mother suggested I get a computer so I could keep track of which records I sold, where they were stored, etc. She knew a programmer who had done some work for her business. I contacted him. He wasn’t available so he suggested Jim Hall. He told me Jim was the best programmer he knew. So, Jim and I met for lunch. I showed him Goldmine magazine. The magazine charges you by the size of the space you use. So, many sellers were putting their listings in the magazine in tiny print. I said to Jim “you know, I think I have an idea that might be better than this. What if you could put your listings searchable in the computer, and then someone else on another computer somewhere could see what you have for sale, and vice-versa.”

Rare Letter by young Paul McCartney discovered

A discovery in a Liverpool library has revealed that Paul McCartney's talent for writing was winning him prizes when he was just 10 – though for an essay about the queen, rather than a hit song. A British researcher said he found an essay written – in very tidy, curling script – by the future Beatle for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Read more here:

When I first heard that Carnegie Hall was going to host a concert performance of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus' "Kristina från Duvemåla", I was absolutely thrilled. Of course they were in Abba, one of my favorite bands of all time. (Full disclosure: I wrote a book about the compilation "Abba Gold" for Continuum's 33 1/3 collection.

The Beatles are fab for business
The band's sonically upgraded CDs sold 235,000 copies during their first two days in stores.

This week, almost 40 years after the band split up, Beatles titles dominate the latest rankings of the nation's bestselling albums, signaling a new, if less hysteria-driven, wave of popularity for the Fab Four. The spike in popularity owes, of course, to the release last week of sonically upgraded CDs of all of the group's studio recordings and the arrival of . The new and improved Beatles CDs sold 235,000 copies during their first two days in stores, and total first-week sales of the individual CDs and two box sets of the group's recordings were projected to be 500,000 to 600,000 copies, possibly higher.

Gemmzine - a Tribute to Patrick Swayze

'Dirty Dancing' star Patrick Swayze dies at 57

Ghost Original Dirty Dancing Legacy Edition

Yes, Patrick Swayze was a movie star and as Gemm does sell DVDs we could legitimately do a story on the gifted actor, but what should not be lost in the equation is that Swayze was the driving force behind two big soundtrack albums that his movies propelled - "Ghost" and "Dirty Dancing". The 1990 CD for GHOST unleashed "Unchained Melody" again and made it a huge, iconic ...if not timeless selection. An orchestral version was included on the CD. Thus, we will be compiling a list of Soundtracks to Patrick's movies as an acknowledgment of the impact the visual side has on the audio side. A unique look at something else that Mr. Swayze brought to the world.

I remember being in the offices of RCA Records' Wendy Goldstein with the late Jimmy Miller, 1987. Wendy told us how the Dirty Dancing soundtrack caught RCA by surprise and sold out so quickly they couldn't press 'em up fast enough.

Patrick Swayze's films had a huge impact on radio and romance...and though his death was not unexpected (a supermarket tabloid has him on a cover today saying he went "home to die"), in light of all the other huge deaths this year, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson...it proves wrong that old cliche "one death is a tragedy, many just statistics" (paraphrased).

Today I heard "Do You Love Me" by The Contours on the radio. #3 in 1962 and #11 in 1988 (not to mention the Dave Clark Five version in 1964 also going to #11)...it amazes me that Oldies radio will play such an old sounding record because it HIT again in 1988, yet "The Twist" by Chubby Checker, which is a little more refreshing than The Contours, can't get Oldies airplay on many mainstream Oldies Stations...despite being in Spiderman #3! - the movie!

The Contours can thank Patrick Swayze, in part, for their renewed success!

NEW YORK TIMES:

Long and Winding Road, Newly Repaved

By ALLAN KOZINN Published: September 2, 2009
THE newly remastered CDs of the Beatles’ original albums and singles, which EMI and Apple Corps, the Beatles’ company, are releasing on Wednesday, have less of a gee-whiz factor than The Beatles: Rock Band, which hits stores on the same day. But for those of us for whom the music is paramount — and who will forever refer to Rock Band as “the toy” — the game is a plastic tail wagging a cartoonish dog. And though the compact disc, as a format, may be on its deathbed, these remastered CDs are really the main event.

Beatles remastered CDs update: the Beatles Box of Vision -- how one man's vision became reality

JONATHAN POKE DISCUSSES THE BEATLES BOXED SET

From EXAMINER.Com

Q. This is an absolutely gorgeous item. Where did the concept of Box of Vision come from?
Jonathan Polk: I had the idea for it originally, close to 10 years ago. It arose out of my frustrations with CDs: the loss of LP size artwork, the inability to store or organize my very large collection in any satisfying way, the inability to enjoy looking at my collection the way I could with vinyl. I set out to figure out a way to satisfy these frustrations as a fan, and that's where the idea started.

New products are added to the Beatles marketplace every year. Aside from the new remastered CDs and "The Beatles: Rock Band," one of the most amazing products out this year is the Beatles Box of Vision, available through http://www.boxofvision.com.

The Beatles remastered: John, Paul, George and Ringo... The Fabber than ever Four By Adrian Thrills

The group's entire back catalogue has been digitally remastered for the first time. As well as their 12 studio LPs, from Please Please Me to Let It Be, two other albums are being re-released: the soundtrack to Magical Mystery Tour and the Past Masters compilation.

Remastering almost nine hours of music took four years. And while the overall alterations in sound quality are subtle - more prominent handclaps on Eight Days A Week, crisper guitars on Yesterday, cleaner drums on Sgt. Pepper - a playback at Abbey Road was enough to convince me that The Fab Four have never sounded better.

The Abbey Road engineers, who liberated the master tapes from a steel vault, have removed electrical clicks, microphone 'pops' and sibilance while preserving the integrity of the original recordings.

All the albums are being made available individually, although there are also two CD boxed sets - one in stereo, the other mono - for collectors.

R.I.P. Ellie Greenwich - Let It Be Written, Let It Be Sung... PDF Print E-mail edit

Ellie Greenwich has passed away. A full tribute to Ellie soon on Gemmzine. Lisa Burns writes "You can almost take her for granted, her songs so ingrained in our psyches. For those of who lived and breathed the sixties they must be a part of our DNA by now. As i kid, i never thought about the songwriter, just the voice calling, breaking up, buzzing through my transistor radio pressed against my ear, or the grainy teen image emanating from black and white tv.

Oh, but what a string of song Ms Ellie left. A solid gold thread, like seams shaping our lives, loves, school daze/haze, teen angst. Continuing to weave, tangled up in flushed, blushed, rosy cheeks, spotted, oily, t zones and sallow complexions. Shallow? No. The songs of Ellie Greenwich were the sounds of the streets, subways, expressways, young hearts thumping bumping the night away. Her songs seeped through the cracks in sidewalks and became part of the air we breathed, and still breathe. They accompany us, penetrating and invigorating, the atmosphere."
