Written by Joe Viglione | Friday, 26 June 2009 19:59 | Beginning this week we are going to introduce the Gemm Projected Coolness Charts. We hope to have Gemm.com hot sales charts, breaking discs, momentum discs and more. What you can look forward to in the coming weeks are reviews on the brand new CD from Ian Hunter along with a rarity "The Best of Ian Hunter" and the extraordinary expanded edition of "Brain Capers" by Mott The Hoople. As author Gene Sculatti has his "Catalog Of Cool" we are going to catalog the coolest music under the sun just for you here on Gemmzine.com #1 Ian Hunter MAN OVERBOARD My opinion on Man Overboard is not yet complete as I've only heard the 30 second soundbites on the web and the review copy is "in the mail", but soundbites indicate if we are going to look forward to a new project or if the review is going to be "work". Ian Hunter's new millennium recordings, "Rant", "Strings Attached", "Shrunken Heads", are all parts of a fabric, a tapestry as Carole King would say, and the path Hunter is on is one that I appreciate and enjoy. So Man Overboard is one of the key albums I'm actually excited about, looking forward to this month, and the soundbites reveal more episodes that will, no doubt, expand the Hunter catalog and satisfy his fan base.
Some artists mature like fine wine, "Sunny" author Bobby Hebb, former (latter-day) Velvet Underground keyboard player Willie "Loco" Alexander, Jackie DeShannon (check out her 2000 CD "You Know Me"), Gavin Sutherland (of Sutherland Brothers & Quiver) - find his "Diamonds And Gold" cd - all artists who avoid the pedestrian and mundane to deliver highly effective and creative works. What these performers have in common with Ian Hunter is a desire to generate their art without the thought of selling 3 million copies. Now with Mott The Hoople's Brain Capers as one of my all-time favorite manic rock & roll discs there's no doubt I have a bias towards Hunter's music, but that being said his initial solo albums and the final Mott The Hoople albums were not my cup of tea. Sure, I got them all but they didn't call to me the way Lou Reed's "Sally Can't Dance" and "Coney Island Baby" spoke volumes (and Lou himself is said to detest Sally Can't Dance, perhaps his finest pure pop record). Ian Hunter is an important artist functioning in this post-hit record world of an industry that is falling apart. It is a travesty that tiny labels are distributing this important art - from Jackie DeShannon's astounding efforts to Willie Alexander's perpetual fountain of brilliance. The cover of Man Overboard with the roller coaster - and the title - appear to offer something special. The musicianship is spot on, you can hear that much from the 30 second clips, and Hunter - compared to Dylan throughout his career - says things to me that Bob Dylan just doesn't care to communicate anymore. Which is why I adore the Dylan back catalog as much as I look forward to these new chapters from Ian Hunter. I'm quite sure my essay on "Man Overboard" will be quite lengthy. For right now read my thoughts on the re-release of the essential Brain Capers. Joe V. 10:38 PM Saturday night, June 27, 2009. The expanded Brain Capers. It doesn't come with the black mask, though that iconic symbol is the last page inside the 20 page booklet. "Death May Be Your Santa Claus" grooves out of the speakers with the fun that made Mott The Hoople one of our favorite bands. Sure, "All The Young Dudes" was very important in getting the band's trademark established, but this opening track was, to me, what this group was truly all about,at least for being one of my all-time favorite bands and - one of the greatest albums of all time. This is the real deal, kids, so after you've explored the beauty of "Ready For Love" and "One Of The Boys" and the Bowie-produced Columbia (Ok, ok, Sony) release, go to this rock & roll Bible and learn how to make great, unbridled sound that rules. The live versions of "Midnight Lady" and "The Journey" (nine minutes and forty-five seconds) are a plus, and the booklet gives great insight...though I can't find where the live takes are from? on this 2003 Angel Air re-release. The bonus tracks aren't on the American Rhino Records version so get ahold of the British CD. Here's the Angel Air site: http://www.angelair.co.uk/sjpcd160.htm Buy Brain Capers on Gemm.com http://www1.gemm.com/c/search.pl?field=GEMM+SEARCH&wild=brain+capers+&Go!.x=0&Go!.y=0&Go!=Search&picklang=%2Findex.cgi%3Flang%3DEN%26clickflag%3D1%26 THE BEST OF IAN HUNTER http://www1.gemm.com/ddc/search.pl?&disp_ad_format_mode=0&artist=HUNTER%2CIAN&price_above=.001&&title=BEST+OF+IAN+HUNTER&price_above=.001& This oddity #2 Let It Roll: Songs by George Harrison #3 Michael Jackson's 25th Anniversary Edition of Thriller, of course: #4 Willie Nile: Beautiful Wreck of the World and Live DVD

R.I.P. Farah Fawcett, Ed McMahon and Michael Jackson Michael Jackson was rushed to the hospital on Thursday, June 25, 2009 and as shocking as it seems, he appears to have passed away. Playing now at 6:46 PM EDT is the "Billie Jean" home demo from "Thriller: Special Edition" - it's fantastic, an exploration of the creative side of the artist building this classic track. The keyboards are spooky, the guitar as exquisite as on the final mix. It's a wonderful listening experience. 6:30 PM EDT More breaking news on Michael as it becomes available MSNBC says 3:26 PM Eastern time ambulances went to the home Jackson was renting. 6:22 PM MSNBC stated that L.A. Times confirmed the death (Published in TMZ, Drudge Report, OK Magazine, etc) and 6:30 PM NBC Not happy with the attacks on Michael Jackson on Facebook and some blogs ...let's be civil...it is a shock. There's an impressive body of work starting with the Jackson 5 into the Quincy Jones era that will be viewed for art's sake. Let's appreciate the music. Those early hits and the latter day hits have never been truly seen as one comprehensive library of good music. With his passing people will view the entire scope of the effect his music had on our culture. Gemmzine pays tribute to the greatness of Michael Jackson's talent with an overview of these albums.

NANCY FOSTER ESSAYS ON MICHAEL JACKSON MICHAEL JACKSON:THRILLER REVISITED
By Nancy "Neon" Foster THRILLER ,released by Epic in November 1982 is reported to be the best selling album of all time with 45 million worldwide sales. It garnered 7 Top Ten US singles and 8 Grammy Awards. While some bands and fans got behind the "It's Rock;Disco sucks" banner , the following THRILLER review appeared in my NYC fanzine, GROOVE ASSOCIATES. I never thought that disco was a threat to rock 'n' roll. I was and still am a firm believer in the idea that a great song or in the case of THRILLER - a great album transcends genre. Moreover the new wave formula became its own downfall. As new wave became slicker, more bound by formula, more commercial, so called disco became more solid, more funky, and more soulful.
One of the members of Bow Wow Wow said that the only good thing about new wave / romantic synth groups is that they spawned stuff like Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Afrika Bambataa and the Soul Sonic Force, etc.. Although the blue eyed soul of Soft Cell, Culture Club, and so on was fun, it couldn't really compare with an old Smokey Robinson and the Miracles album or what was then a new Michael Jackson album -THRILLER.
FROM GROOVE ASSOCIATES PREMIER ISSUE,1982:MICHAEL JACKSON:THRILLER - This is like a greatest hits album. The album is a masterpiece of composition, performance, and production by two musical genui- Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. Eventhough I think the McCartney duet is hardly the most exciting cut on THRILLER, Michael Jackson is such a rare talent that he envigorates this song which would generally be too slick and perfect for my tastes. It is amazing that Michael was able to collaborate so successfully with such disparate influences from Paul McCartney to Eddie Van Halen to Vincent Price. THRILLER despite these varied influences is a congruent work of art that is pure Michael Jackson.
The opener "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" ,written by Jackson himself is my favorite. This has definitely crossed over to the Latin dance clubs. In fact, this song doesn't sound right on a home system. This song and the album as a whole deserve a monster sound system, a mammoth dance floor, and hundreds of sweatin', writhin" bodies to do it justice-like NYC's Roxy on a hot Friday night.
This song THROBS with a sensual, primordial pulsebeat. The Latin ending is the perfect finale!
"Baby Be Mine" is more SWEET SOUL MUSIC with a beautiful, loving vocal treatment right down to the yelps. The pacing of the music and the cadence of the falling words is dynamic. "Thriller" is another hit complete with howls and a Vincent Price rap. While "Beat It" would generally be too metallic for my tastes, Jackson's amazing vocal could redeem anything. "Billie Jean" is another brilliant dance hit, this one about a paternity suit. "Human Nature" is soft, sweet, and relatively low key. "PYT" picks things up again with a hot, funky workout. "The Lady In My Life" is a Stylistics type slow dance number. (NANCY NEON, GROOVE ASSOCIATES #1,1982)
The single of the season has to be "Candy Girl" by New Edition from Roxbury, MA. They are as close to the Jacksons, as we will get. This single sounds- so great back-to-back with a Jacksons classic like "The Love You Save". Thanks to the club of the month, the Roxy for making Friday nights fab fun! I haven't forgotten the SOUL SONIC FORCE either. Their night at the Roxy was one of the best nights ever!(NANCY NEON, GROOVE ASSOCIATES,#1,1982)
Surprise! Surprise! That was NOT Michael Jackson dancing at the GRANDMASTER FLASH show at the Peppermint Lounge show. The very flexible young man was Laine Lassiter from Chapel Hill, NC. Lassi-ter is on SUGAR HILL records. Paul Weller of the Jam and Style Council told your truly "I really like a lot of the stuff coming out of NYC like SUGAR HILL . (NANCY NEON, GROOVE ASSOCIATES #1,1982)

The Doors at the Boston Arena (Published Friday April 10, 2009)
Years after Paul Rothchild helped established the band with his production style and Botnick picked up the slack by helping to craft the masterpiece that is L.A. Woman, these live performances give the fans the music they crave. "Been Down So Long" is a revelation because the immaculate recording on L.A. Woman is deconstructed here to marvelous effect. This review is just of disc three, the rest of the album is drawn out and lovely as well and is an essential piece of the Doors puzzle...damn the critics who just didn't get it. The Doors At Boston Arena Lots of record reviews will be found on that page
| Much has been written about Lou Reed's Berlin album, and there's much more pen to go to paper on this work. That a new generation is getting the information from live concerts that Lou performed in Brooklyn is unique, to say the least. What is very un-Lou about this DVD is that it opens with commercials for, among other things, a Joy Division disc. Now in my teenage years my friends and I would follow the Lenox, Boston and Rhode Island legs of what is now known as the "Rock 'n' Roll Animal Tour", much of which you can find downloadable on the web, though I urge you also to pick up producer Paul Williams remastering of the Rock 'n' Roll Animal CD with the two bonus tracks. Going to New York to see Lou Reed perform this was a thought I had, and his thoughtful management set aside tickets if I so chose, but there was something anti- | climactic about it for me. 1973 was a different time, Lou Reed and John Cale performing an encore at a Cale gig at CBGB's was very special, 1989 with the "Songs For 'Drella" in Brooklyn was also unique, so decades on I'm content to watch things at home on TV or on the computer. The DVD does not disappoint |

David Peel, Sunny Gospel, Surf Music Returns, as does Psychedelia | There's More To Surf Music than THE BEACH BOYS SURF MUSIC! It's a genre as exciting as Space Age Bachelor Pad, as revealing as psychedelia and as refreshing as an ocean wave. One of the classic albums of the era is repackaged as a twofer by The Sandals with the catchy new name "Wild As The Sea: Complete Sandals 1964-1969" - Highly recommended. Bruce Brown's immortal documentary on following summer all the way around the world is also an exquisite colorful imprint of 60's vibes and colours - and what better way to enjoy the memories than by picking up the music that this innovative motion picture spawned. We at G.E.M.M. are going to be exploring multiple genres and suggest starting with The Sandals compilation or the Endless Summer soundtrack itself. |

Mojo Presents "I Can See For Miles" Lost Tracks from America's Psychedelic Underground Jimi Hendrix could've whispered "And you'll never hear psychedlic music again..." |
| The 13th Floor Elevators title, "(I've Got)Levitation" might be a better title for this great-great grandson of the mighty Nuggets compilation and subsequent boxed sets, and naming this superb collection after a Who song which isn't evencontained amongst the 15 tracks (but does fit nicely with Mojo Magazine's multiple-version WHO cover this issue) is an oddity, but there's no argument with the great selection of music from Terry Mannin6, First Frew To The Moon, The Mystery Trend and others. "Guess Things Happen That Way" by Terry Mannin6 reminds those who are immersed in this snapshot genre, one that takes frozen moments in time from echoing garages stretched across the American landscape. This is purely American music and the imitators years later have too many technological fantasy tools to generate the primitive and ... authentic...sound that you'll find here.
| "Hurricane Fighter Plane" by The Red Crayola is creative, innovative and tells a story over the compressed vibes put together in a time and place that didn't know bout ones and zeros. This compilation is absolutely terrific and actually plunges the depths to a place below the sonic sensations found on Nuggets...this is an underground version of nuggets unleashed on a magazine in a day when paper documents are in a battle for their very lives against the digital realm that is the internet. | You can find copies of MOJO MAGAZINE with CDs on GEMM.com |
| WHEN SUNNY GOES GOSPEL! | Fans have been asking the composer of "Sunny" to perform "When Sunny Gets Blue", and GEMMZine hears that Bobby Hebb is about to record that classic as well as, possibly, "On The Sunny Side Of The Street". But simultaneous with this historic happening his cousin, Pastor Rosetta Swain, recently recorded a Gospel version of "Sunny" which Bobby let her re-title "Jesus". What is extraordinary about this - along with the new Gospel production being absolute dynamite, is that another spiritual person, Pat Watson, has recorded a new version of "Sunny" - Gospel Sunny, on her forthcoming release - FEELING GOOD. So look on Gemm.com for Rosetta Swain's From Me To You and Pat Watson's Feeling Good | |
