Barry Cowsill CD U.S. 1

image Thirteen songs written and produced by the late Barry Cowsill are an effective testament to the talented member of the group that hit #2 on Billboard in October of 1967 with an Artie Kornfeld/Steve Duboff composition, "The Rain, The Park and Other Things". Titled after the name of his band, U.S.1, this album provides a glimpse into the Cowsill named Barry's rock & roll sensibilities, unreleased recordings from 2005 coupled with previously unreleased outtakes. It's driving alternative rock with a definite country edge, from the opening blasts of "Walk Talk" to "Goin' Home"...no, no, no...not the Alvin Lee song from Artie Kornfeld's WOODSTOCK festival... this interesting

saga has about as much to do with Ten Year's After's Woodstock hit as it does with "The Rain, The Park and Other Things". It's fun on an entirely different planet...and level...and shows Barry could escape the confines of his fame to break out and do truly innovative and interesting things.

I first met Barry at Normandy Sound in 1987 or thereabouts...he was very low-key, a real gentleman, and he would've been thrilled with this package. A three-part gatefold with a two-page insert that includes a photo of a dog tag with an inscription: "In honor of Barry Cowsill: A True Genius who Died on The Levee 9-2-05."

Musicians include Mike Warner on drums, Rick Singer on saxophone, pianist Johnny Juxo and legendary harmonica player James Montgomery. Cowsill plays bass, piano, guitars and does the singing. Some of the irreverence of Willie "Loco" Alexander is in tracks like "Jungle Lady", with the percussive stomps and quirky vocals, and what the album does is provide the listener with an entertaining and eclectic selection of original songs that are performed with heart and a dash of humor. In a perfect world this album should have garnered Barry Cowsill further musical respect had he lived - with his untimely passing it is up to his survivors like wife Debbie Scott Cowsill to spread the gospel.

On an equally sad note, the late Ron Davies passed away on October 30, 2003 after sending me his newest CD and setting up an interview that never took place. Davies was the brother of noted country singer Gail Davies and wrote the title track of Three Dog Night's "It Ain't Easy" album, a song covered by David Bowie for Ziggy Stardust and Mitch Ryder for his Detroit album. My review of "Where Does The Time Go" was published on AMG and the sites that reissue AllMusic.com's content.

MICHAEL JACKSON MOVIE PREMIERE MOVED UP! From Los Angeles Times

Aiming to create a cinematic happening out of the theatrical release of its newly acquired Michael Jackson movie, Sony announced today that “Michael Jackson: This Is It” will arrive in theaters for a limited two-week run on Oct. 28 — two days earlier than its original release date.

Drew Miller of Omnium Records is our interview this month in GEMMZINE

The Perils of Stardom: The Fall of Aerosmith's STEVEN TYLER

As if both Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones (and Mick Taylor if you think about it) didn't learn that stardom has its perils. Steven Tyler is a rock legend...and it is hard to think that the young man who opened for Ray Davies & The Kinks back in 1972 at the Wang Center (the Music Hall in Boston) would succumb to the antagonist of Ray Davies' lost classic (old, demon) "Alcohol"...but

if a picture's worth a thousand words, Dude looks like a little old lady in this photo. And that is not said lightly, it is a sad day when a champion of being sober falls down so far ...and so off of the wagon. Check out the Boston Herald photo re-published in Classic Rock

This is tragic...Michael Jackson is dead due to substance abuse, and Tyler is withering away. Seasons of Wither are here. The members of Aerosmith are an essential and important rock and roll institution, collectively Aerosmith is a monster. We will have an in-depth story on Aerosmith on Gemmzine soon.

Fallen Star Steven Tyler on You Tube -

If anything this is a look at the artist not having any privacy, the stardom Tyler wanted so desperately, and its invasion as he is probably considering a Greta Garbo escape, and a look at the irresponsible behavior of someone who puts himself up there as a role model. If you're going to walk that way you'd better be able to talk the talk. Tyler has a responsibility to his fans, so I make no apologies for re-publishing what is already circulating on the internet. It's not a pretty picture and the wish is that reality was more reflective of the values Aerosmith have claimed during their comeback. But some of rock & roll p.r. is an illusion - it just is too bad when kids who buy Tyler's recordings think it will be OK to get a nip on the side.

Malden - “Taste the juice from grapes of wrath” sings Al Firicano, professionally known as Al Ravage, lead singer of Malden-based hard rock group Ravage.

Firicano’s definite vocals and the clever opening guitar lines are garnering over 12,300 hits and climbing on their Internet site, www.myspace.com/swwr — but perhaps a more remarkable achievement is the group’s recent signing to a major American recording company.

Even long-time Gemm sellers know that with 30 Million Records, LPs, CDs and other musical configurations it is impossible to navigate through any major portal like Gemm and its competitors to find things that may have slipped your mind. That's why we've created http://www.gemmzine.com - Gemm Magazine.

While reading about The Rolling Stones' classic song "Tumblin' Dice" on Gemmzine you are afforded the opportunity to click on images and find all sorts of fascinating Stones-related items, including, of course, a variety of

copies of Exile On Main Street, the album that spawned that great hit recording. Try clicking on the CD or LP cover of Exile On Main Street to the left and Michael Jackson's 25th Anniversary Edition of Thriller on the right to "test drive" our newly refined search engine. Since your editor managed the man who produced that recording for many years, the late Jimmy Miller, you will also find tidbits about The Rolling Stones that you may not have discovered in old magazines or on other web pages/magazines. Indeed, we have many hours of Jimmy Miller interview tape that may emerge on GemmRadio in the not-so-distant future.
Gemm was very sensitive to the tragic passing of Michael Jackson. As long-time musicologists our staff took the effort to understand his genius, the brilliance of those early recordings, and quickly put things into perspective while allowing Michael's many fans the opportunity to tastefully peruse Gemm to find the man's music - a more respectful atmosphere than rushing to the stores to grab just anything. Gemm buyers are serious music fans, and now that we've expanded to DVDs/films, books, collectibles and other items that our retailers offer the world, Gemm is a powerful tool re-emerging and re-establishing itself as a major force in the marketplace.image

Be it reviews of songs, like "Welcome To The Terrordome" from that perpetual fountain of ideas, Public Enemy's Fear of A Black Planet CD (click on the title to read the review) or exclusive interviews with authors like Suzanne Vega - writer of The Passionate Eye - or Daniel Monti's The Great Life Makeover (click on the covers to find the books) our readers are having enormous fun learning more about these artists and authors through their own voices as well as from the perspective of our expert reviewers.

My nine years with AllMusic.com and AllMovie.com bring the flavor of what makes those sites so great and special to the buying experience at Gemm com. Our 15th year is a year of big expansion with content a main focus as we move forward into the next 15 years.

Gemm.com's new ultra fast search engine and http://Gemmzine.com make buying on Gemm one of the most fun experiences on the internet.

Gemm

With a staff of writers so immersed in and excited about innovative music GEMMzine is an ever-evolving platform offering more than just the chance to buy what you need.

It is Michael Mania, but what about the original King, Jackson's ex-father-in-law?

Michael Jackson 24/7. Why didn't Sirius have a Michael Jackson round-the-clock channel? In all seriousness I think the media coverage is deserving. As frustrated as I was with Jackson's excesses, overspending and lack of discipline (not to mention his failure to keep Quincy Jones onboard as his full-time producer - someone who understood the artistry) there is no doubt that Michael Jackson was tremendously talented ...a very gifted individual.

With Motown releasing an "unplugged" version of "I'll Be There" the week of Michael Jackson's passing we're sure there will be more Motown repackaging...stay tuned to Gemmzine.com for more facts, details and observations.

ALLEN KLEIN, MANAGER OF THE BEATLES AND THE ROLLING STONES, PASSES AWAY

Allen Klein, the head of ABKCO, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2009.

I met Allen twice at his office on 1700 Broadway, 41st Fl. in Manhattan while I was in business with the late Jimmy Miller, producer of over 100 songs by The Rolling Stones. A full essay will be published soon on our MusicBusinessMonthly.com newsfeed and is currently linked here.

While Allen B. Klein released "Hot Rocks", "More Hot Rocks" and "The Singles" collections, The Rolling Stones remain the only major recording artist that doesn't have something along the lines of
The Beatles Anthology or boxed sets as enjoyed by fans of The Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane...heck, even WOODSTOCK has its own boxed set.

Right now you can pick up Rolling Stones collectibles on http://GEMM.com

but a boxed set, Gemmzine believes, will happen sooner than later. Stay tuned.
